The perfect sale
Imagine the last time you bought something without hesitation, without even asking the price.
What made that purchase so fast and decisive?
Here are two of mine.
Cat toys. I came home from a friend's house. He had a full setup for his cat (toys, accessories, the works), and the cat looked thrilled. I went home thinking I don't invest enough in my own cat's well-being. The thought triggered a strong feeling. Within two minutes I'd bought the top five highest-rated cat toys on the marketplace.
Claude Max. I'd been on the Pro plan and constantly hitting my token limits. It took me a few hours to decide, honestly. But the deciding thought was why not, I can cancel later. $100/month is an interesting number. On one hand, not much. On the other, around 5x a Netflix subscription or a Pro OpenAI/Claude plan.
One purchase is B2C. The other is B2B. The cat toys were pure emotion. The Claude Max subscription was a professional decision.
I find the psychology of buying decisions fascinating.
What makes us buy?
I truly believe the perfect sale is about timing and pain.
Our job in sales and marketing is to do everything we can to get to the sales conversation at that particular perfect moment.
That's why who we target and when we reach them matters more than closing techniques and hacks.
When I'm confused about a deal, I imagine the scene of selling water to a person in the desert. Pain and timing change the context of the sale.
I'll keep exploring this going forward.
